Leyburn Sprints 17th & 18th August 2019 – Results.
The 24th annual Leyburn Sprints, had a field of 211 drivers, a diverse line-up of classic, historic and performance cars ranging in vintage from 1925 to 2018. More than 150 cars also entered the Shannon’s Show ‘n’ Shine, this year also had the Retro Caravan Show Off this drew big interest from spectators.
New South Wales driver Dean Amos broke the track record for the 2nd year in a row, Amos put his 2006 Gould GR55B V8 open-wheeler around the houses in a new record time of 39.79 seconds, second outright was Queensland driver Warwick Hutchinson in his Rotary open wheeler and third outright was North Queenslander Michael Von Rappard in his supercharged Dallara F392.
A huge crowd gathered on both Saturday and Sunday to see more than 211 historic, classic and performance cars contest the time trials also 150 cars in a Shannon’s Shine n’ Shine along with 25 vintage caravans. The weather was perfect and the crowd was enormous.
Proceeds from the Historic Sprints weekend went to the Wheatvale Sate School, over $9500 was raised from this weekend.
There were 6 rotary powered cars in 5 different Classes running at this year’s event.
Running in Historic Touring Cars – Group Nc 2001cc – 5000cc (Log Book) Class
Matthew Clift (R100)
Matthew in his Mazda R100 did very well over the weekend, Matthew’s best time was on his last run on Sunday with a time of 50.89 sec. he did well to finish 1st in this Class and 26th outright.
Running in Touring Cars (Pre – 1980) Over 2000cc Class
Paul Spiteri (RX3)
Paul in his Mazda RX3 went well over the weekend, this rotor sounded fantastic, Paul’s best time was also on his last run on Sunday with a time of 52.25 sec, he finish 1st in this Class and 38th outright.
Running in Sports Sedans (Non-log book) Over 2000cc Class
Eric Stanley (Mazda 323 – RX323)
Eric in his Mazda 323 sports sedan went well over the weekend, this rotor also sounded fantastic, Eric’s best time was on his 3rd run for the weekend with a time of 58.41 sec, he finish 6th in this Class and 138th outright.
Running in Modern Sports Cars – 2001cc to 3500cc Class
Paul Hibberd (RX8)
Paul in his Mazda RX8 went well over the weekend, this was Paul’s first time entering his RX8 in this event, Paul’s best time was on his 2nd last run on Sunday with a time of 54.73 sec, he finish 2nd in this Class and 84th outright.
Running in Racing Cars – Formula Libre (Log Book) Class was Daniel Duffield (RPV01-B) and Warwick Hutchinson (RPV03 OMS28)
Daniel Duffield was driving his Dad’s Turbo 13B Rotary open wheeler (RPV01-B) it was good to see this car back at the Leyburn Sprints again with Daniel getting faster and more confident every time he drive this car, great to see. He finished all of the 7 runs with no issues. Daniel best time was on his last run on Sunday with a time of 46.58 sec this was over 3.7 sec quicker than Daniel went last year, he finish 6th in this Class and 8th outright this was an excellent result for such a young driver, lookout for Daniel next year.
Warwick Hutchinson driving his Rotary open wheeler (RPV03 OMS28)
Warwick’s fastest time was on the 6th run with a time of 41.21 sec. he finished 2nd in this Class and 2nd outright.

Once again the organizers of this event should be congratulated as again this event was another great success and we are now looking forward to running in the next year’s event.
