Ironman Hillclimb, 19th September 2010.
The MG Car Club Ironman weekend consists of a full weekend of motor racing. On the Friday night there is a night navigation run, on Saturday there is a motorkahana & sprint at Queensland Raceway, then on the Sunday there is a Hillclimb to finish the event. The overall winner for the Ironman is the driver who is the most competitive in all 4 sections.
This year’s Hillclimb had only a total of 51 cars running and we had a total of 7 runs over the day. The weather was not very kind with rain forecast for the day, however it did improve. The first run was slightly wet, and then it got even wetter with the need to bolt on our wet grooved slick tyres. The next few runs were better with no rain just overcast, the track dried to allow some good times on the last run of the day.
This year’s Ironman Hillclimb event was special as this was the first time a new perpetual trophy was introduced.
The trophy is the “Bob Cossor” perpetual trophy for the fastest time of the day – Ironman Hillclimb. This was donated by the Cossor family in memory of Bob Cossor, who died earlier this year. Bob had been a member of the MG Car Club over the years, working very hard at the Mt Cotton Hillclimb, manning the canteen as well as a Vice-President of the club. Bob and his wife Bev competed at Mt Cotton Hillclimb in a lot of different make of cars that Bob had modified. One of the cars that Bob had was the car he called the “Rotary Ho” as he had ripped out the original engine and fitted a Rotary engine, so it as named the “Rotary Ho”.
It was great to see that the first time the “Bob Cossor” perpetual trophy was awarded it was won by another modified car with a Rotary engine, I believe that this is a tribute to Bob and his ideas of modifying racing cars.
Bob’s wife Bev and family presented the trophy to Warwick Hutchinson who had the fastest time of the day, in his Rotary powered open-wheeler with a time of 40.59 sec.
The overall winner of the Ironman was Stephen Faulks in his Subaru WRX STi, second place went to Mick McMillan in his Mitsubishi Evo 9 and third place went to Michael Ciccotelli on his Gladiator LC 500.
Congratulations also must go to the MG Car Club and all the volunteers who helped put the Ironman weekend together, well done.
The next Hillclimb is at Mt Cotton on the 2nd & 3rd of October – Round 4 of the Tighe Cams Series.
