Results – Australian Hillclimb Championship – Mt Cotton 2013

Whites Diesel’s Australian Hillclimb Championship Results 2nd & 3rd November 2013.

This year’s Australian Hillclimb Championship was organized by the MG Car Club of Queensland with huge support from Whites Diesel’s as the major sponsor for the event. The track for this year was the Mt Cotton Hillclimb in Brisbane Queensland.

Drivers briefing for the AHC 2013 at Mt Cotton – rotaryhillclimbracing.com

With brilliant typical Queensland weather the AHC kicked-off with Friday’s practice runs, most of the people running took to the track to hone their skills for the main event. Unfortunately the 2012 AHC champion Tim Edmondson in his Gould GR55B had a mishap on one of the faster sections heading back to the finish line and damaged both himself and his car. Tim sustained a broken wrist and was unable to compete on the official runs starting Saturday.

With 111 cars taking part in this year’s event there was only 4 Rotary Hillclimb Racing Cars competing in this Hillclimb, Steve Torpey (RX7 – 12A Turbo), Sean Sorenson (Ford Anglia Sports Sedan – 13B Turbo), Darren Duffield (RPV01-B 13B Turbo Formula Libre) and Warwick Hutchinson (RPV02 13B Turbo Formula Libre) a short summary of how they all went and their best times are listed below.

The first official runs on Saturday started from 9am and were mostly under control, and only a few cars had some off’s. The pace for outright times were extremely fast and very close between Greg Ackland in his self built (Ackland GA8) and Brett Hayward also in his self built (Hayward 09) both running mid 36 second runs during the day. This was followed closely by Malcolm Oastler (Dallara F394).

The outright times on Sunday were dominated by the 3 motorcycle engine cars of Greg Ackland, Brett Hayward and Malcolm Oastler. The fastest Car engine vehicle was Doug Barry running his V6 Lola.

It was very impressive to see just how fast a car can run around the Mt Cotton and to watch Greg as one with his car on the absolute edge was something special. Well done Greg well deserved win and congratulations to Brett and Malcolm great to see good blokes doing what they love in vehicles they have built and modified.

The top 10 outright cars were –

1st Greg Ackland – Ackland GA8 – 36.22

2nd Brett Hayward – Hayward 09 – 36.45

3rd Malcolm Oastler – Dallara F394 – 36.77

4th Doug Barry – Lola – 37.59

5th Allen McConnell Van-Dieman RF87 – 37.86

6th Dean Tighe – Dallara-Judd 4.0 – 38.02

7th Warwick Hutchinson – Van-Dieman RF92 RPV02 – 38.47

The Rotary Hillclimb Racing Cars summary –

Steve Torpey was running in Marque Sports – 3000cc & over Class, in his Mazda Rx7 12A Turbo. Steve set his fastest time on the first official run on Saturday with a time of 50.36sec, although Steve ran all 8 runs over both days his first run was his quickest. Steve ended up 4th in Class and 82nd outright. Good result and great to see another rotary turbo running at this event.

Sean Sorenson was running his Ford Anglia Sports Sedan (13B Turbo) in Sports Sedans – 2001cc & over Class. Sean ran all 8 runs staring with a 56.34 sec first run and set his fastest time on his last run on Sunday with a time of 48.22 sec. He had boost problems early on Saturday but a trip home to get a better exhaust manifold to solve the issue proved to the trick for Sunday. Sean finished the weekend 4th in class and 65th outright.

Darren Duffield was running his RPV01-B (13B Turbo) Rotary Hillclimb Racing Car in the Formula Libre – 2001cc & over Class. This was Darren’s first major outing in this car since changing the gearbox over to a Renault transaxle, Darren also change the rear suspension at the same time. It was very good to see the car back out at Mt Cotton having a good crack at the hill. Although the car had a miss-fire in the engine due to wiring problem the car looked fantastic, Darren also ran all 8 runs over the 2 days. His first run on Saturday was a 44.08 sec and his fastest was run 7 on Sunday with a time of 42.61sec. Darren ended up 7th in Class and 19th outright. Great result and it was good to have you back running the RPV01-B.

Warwick Hutchinson was running his Van-dieman RF92 RPV02 (13B Turbo) Rotary Hillclimb Racing Car in the Formula Libre – 2001cc & over Class. Warwick’s first run was a 39.09 he also ran all 8 runs and set a new PB on the last run of the day at 38.47, he finished 3rd in Class and 7th outright. Warwick & Darren were under huge pressure from Ron Hay in his Synergy Dallara & Dean Amos in his Gould GR37, both were very fast and Dean ended up just 0.06 behind Warwick then the very fast “Old Bloke” Ron Hay was just another 0.25 sec behind Dean.

This was one of the best Australian Championships that we have attended and the MGCCQ and the organizing committee must be congratulated for their hard work well done and thanks it was a pleasure to compete.
