Rotary Hillclimb Racing Wings Fitting the wings to the rotary hillclimb racing car and Dyno Tuning Engine

Fitting the wings to the rotary hillclimb racing car and Dyno Tuning Engine

Now that the car is complete and the engine is running I needed to get the engine dyno-tuned and then get the wings setup and mounted to the car.

I organized with Ben at Rotary Motorsport to tune the engine on his chassis dyno. As suggested by Ben we set the boost to 7 Psi and tuned the engine to a safe tune using the Microtech ECU. All went well with the tune and the power output was 250HP at the wheels, this is not a lot of power for a Rotary 13B Turbo but it is very good power for just 7 Psi of boost. This we can change at a later date to get more power, but for now this will be enough to get the car running and get some time in the seat to see how the car handles etc.

Now I needed to get on to the making and mounting the wings. A friend of mine Gary gave me some moulds a while ago for wings so I thought that I would use them.

I had all good intensions to make the wings using these moulds and I was going to make the wings out of carbon or Kevlar but as all good intentions, I was running out of time and money so I had the wings made out of fiberglass using the moulds that Gary gave me. The results were good but the fiberglass wings are a bit heaver than I would have liked, but this would have to do for now.

The wings were made but I still needed to mount them together and then mount the assembled wings to the car.

Once the wings were assembled I mounted them to the car.

Then the last thing I had to do is buff the fiberglass wings to give them a good glossy finish. The photo shows the rear wing assembly being buffed by my very supportive crew my wife Suzy and my father-in-law Ian.

The wings are finished and mounted to the car, so now I had to arrange to get stickers for our sponsors. The photo shows the car with all the sponsors stickers and the wings fitted.
